The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of the field

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: Spurs go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
