Two Separate Cuba-Destined Aid Sailboats Listed Unaccounted For after Leaving the Coast of Mexico.
A comprehensive search and rescue operation is presently ongoing in the Caribbean region for a duo of unlocated sailboats carrying relief goods traveling from the Mexican coast to Cuba.
Naval Search and Rescue Operations Launched
Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval teams and search planes to search for the two vessels, which were carrying at least 9 sailors, per a official statement.
The vessels had been projected to make landfall in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their arrival, authorities reported.
The Situation of Relief to the Nation
The island nation has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island struggles through widespread national electricity failures.
"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and both vessels are fitted with suitable navigational gear and communication devices," a spokesperson associated with the mission stated.
The nine-person crew are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.
"Our team is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.
Previous Aid Mission
Earlier in the week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received a different ship that had delivered a significant amount of donated goods to the island.
That vessel, dubbed "a modern Granma" following the name of the yacht in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to begin the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, medicines, baby formula, bikes and food.
Wider Political Climate
Volunteers and NGOs have largely spearheaded efforts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation came into effect.
Global bodies have since warned of ""critical" shortages of supplies, with in excess of 50k surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba amid power shortages.
Foreign policy pressure have intensified over the past months, with comments from different officials highlighting the complicated situation regarding relations.
Reacting to previous proposals, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."
Accounts suggest that early stages of discussions commenced, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.
The maritime authorities stated it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its disposal to locate the sailboats and secure the security of the sailors.
As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
