This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life away from worry.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, donated by a local firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people yelling “six-seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the holiday season,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: vibrant, varied, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Every time, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and strong coffee as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
