The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by artist the talented musician. This piece from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have some surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
