The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors since the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core platform, hesitated to declare this decision right away after his triumph in November.

"The choice was based on the security of my family and the importance of directing all of my focus on carrying out the platform on affordability the city's residents supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change there, it will forever remain within me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his opponents, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he came from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a space for official events, and championed a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria home.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the price of rent exceeds the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
