The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part series created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The last series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
