An extensive manufacturing complex located in the suburbs of Jakarta is dealing with nuclear pollution following an official taskforce found presence of the dangerous isotope Caesium-137 at twenty-two manufacturing facilities within the area, which encompasses companies shipping frozen marine products.

The FDA explained: “The primary health effect of concern following longer term, repeated low dose exposure (eg through eating of polluted food or liquid over a period) is an elevated risk of cancer, resulting from harm to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Pollution and Medical Checks

Radioactivity tests showed at least twenty-two factories in the industrial area were affected. The Indonesian taskforce did not name the 21 other manufacturing facilities, but said they would immediately undergo cleanup processes carried out by the country's atomic energy authority.

The environment minister stated that residents residing in strongly contaminated zones would be relocated until the location was cleaned, emphasizing that the safety of the residents was the “top priority”.
