Plans for Trump-Putin Meeting Delayed Shortly After Budapest Negotiations Announced
Currently exist "no preparations" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has declared.
Recently Trump indicated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital soon to examine the Ukraine conflict.
A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration said the two had had a "positive" conversation and that a meeting was no longer "required".
The administration declined to provide any more details on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.
Earlier Events
The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Certain accounts claimed his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders suggesting the president had pressured him to relinquish significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.
Yet, on this week the American president supported a ceasefire proposal supported by Ukraine and EU officials to pause the conflict on the existing battle lines.
"Leave it as is in its current state," he stated.
Russia has consistently objected against pausing the present battle positions.
Moscow was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Lavrov commented on this week, implying that halting hostilities would only amount to a brief pause.
Diplomatic Positions
The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities required resolution, Lavrov said, using Russian diplomatic language for a set of comprehensive conditions that involve the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of the country – a impossible condition for Kyiv and its European partners.
Zelensky said talks regarding the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.
He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the delivery of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.
Military Considerations
The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader last Thursday preceded speculation that the United States was preparing to send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit inside Russia.
Zelensky said it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had proven to be a "significant input" in diplomacy", he added.
