New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities issued security footage Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday in the area between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
