New Year Celebrants Advised to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Predicted Across the UK
Forecasters are reporting a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Proceed In Spite of Warnings
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are set to take place, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," stated the national forecaster.
Displays Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies
Across the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Readings are expected to be low, so additional clothing a necessity, said forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday
Heading into Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Readings Forecast to Fall Further
Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Advisories Released
Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials stated this indicated the weather was expected to lead to major effects across the NHS and care systems. This includes a likely increase in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, preparing for winter conditions is utterly key.
