The Gunners' boss has expressed confidence that his team can keep managing with injury setbacks after revealing that star striker Kai Havertz remains out for a few more weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

The German forward has been absent for months after undergoing an operation on his knee. Originally slated to come back earlier in December, Arteta explained the player faced a hurdle when advancing his recovery and failed to reach “the required stage.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a team that is far more dependable and has more options,” Arteta said.

Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture

This update leaves a tactical puzzle for the midweek fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. A decision is required between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who got a goal playing out of position last weekend, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly after a fitness issue as a substitute. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is an option post-recovery.

Fitness Doubts Linger

More doubts surround centre-back William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably start again in the backline for the table-toppers.

Arteta feels the significant outlay on reinforcements in the last transfer window has placed the club in a far better place to handle such unavailability.

Squad Depth Vital for Premier League Pursuit

When asked if increased squad depth was helping their league challenge, the manager agreed. “Yes, since the current term has seen more issues in the attacking line, and now the problems with the defence,” he noted.

“Our previous experiences taught us that we must deploy players in alternative spots, and they need to be prepared to adapt to new tasks if we aim to challenge at the highest level. And the instance of Mikel is just the best one.”

Arteta's Support for Suffering Star

Addressing the delay noted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave additional context. “He followed all protocols. He could not go to the next level and now it’s looking like we have unlocked that.”

The manager conveyed his eagerness to have him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. I mean, it’s a player that, in my view, I admire greatly for what he brings to the team, but his mentality, his nature. I watch him struggle on the sidelines.”

“His availability record is phenomenal, he’s been always available, and I can’t wait to get him back involved playing because I believe it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
