Larian Studios Clarifies Its Use of Machine Learning for Next Project

The team behind hit role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its next major project, creating significant anticipation within the player base. However, recent remarks from the company's figurehead have introduced nuance to the discussion, addressing the team's philosophy toward machine learning.

Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs

In a new statement, Swen Vincke outlined that the developer is using generative AI for certain ancillary functions. These include fleshing out pitch decks, generating initial artistic references, and drafting placeholder dialogue.

Importantly, Vincke emphasized that the end content in the game will be crafted solely by human writers. "Larian is writing every line ourselves," he affirmed.

We are actively growing our pool of concept artists and are busily forming narrative groups.

As this area is being explicitly mentioned — we presently have twenty-three visual developers and have positions available for further talent.

Each initiative we do is additive and aimed at enabling creatives to spend more time on making content.

Any AI system used well is supplementary to a artist's process, not a replacement for their craft.

Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision

The revelation of using AI originally generated concern among portions of the player base. In response, Vincke provided more elaboration on online platforms.

"At Larian, we employ these tools to gather inspiration, in the same way we use search engines and physical media," he stated. "During the conceptual brainstorming phase we use it as a rough outline for composition which we then substitute with original artwork."

He continued, "Our studio recruits talent for their creative vision, not for their willingness to execute what a AI generates."

Key Areas of AI Integration

Vincke had earlier outlined the studio's targeted method to machine learning, grouping its use into primary pillars:

  • Streamlining Repetitive Work: This encompasses refining animations, voice editing, and pipeline-specific tasks like retargeting animations.
  • Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using technology to speedily create basic mock-ups of mechanics to test concepts ahead of complete production.
  • Experimental Frontiers: Researching how AI could in the future facilitate innovative gameplay, specifically in creating unforeseen permutations in a detailed game universe.

He specifically stated that key artistic areas — including writing — are are in no way fields where the team is replacing artistic involvement. On the contrary, Larian is recruiting more in these precise roles.

"Our studio is not releasing a game with any AI components, and we are certainly not considering trimming down teams to swap them out with AI," Vincke stated definitively.
