Instructor Fatally Shot and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Gunbattle at School in Nigeria

Armed conflict at learning center
Learning centers in Nigeria's northern region have become frequent targets for militant organizations

Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.

The armed faction breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.

The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their living quarters, an official report indicated.

One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.

Local residents disclosed to media that the armed men then led a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and suspected escape routes.

In recent years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have increasingly been targeted for militant organizations, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, resulting in households in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they expect and desire their daughters' safe return.

Protection challenge in northern Nigeria has intensified significantly in the last several months, with educational institutions experiencing the greatest impact of the conflict.
