German Mayor Critically Injured in Knife Assault, Police Confirm
A recently appointed mayor in Germany's western region has been attacked with a knife and left critically injured close to her residence, police say.
The official, 57 years old, is a affiliate of the SPD political group and became the mayor of Herdecke in the regional state in September.
Area law enforcement report a major operation is under way in the small town. Investigators indicate every possibility is being checked, but they are not ruling out a domestic link.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz censured what he called "a heinous act", stating: "We are concerned about the survival of the newly elected mayor, the victim, and wish for complete healing."
The party expressed its party members were profoundly stunned by the incident.
Authorities say Stalzer's two adopted children - a daughter, 17, and a 15-year-old son - contacted emergency services to authorities at noon (11:00 BST).
The children were later taken away for questioning and evidence collection. A journalist present witnessed a young person getting into a law enforcement vehicle.
This summer, there was an incident of domestic violence in the family, which was documented by authorities, insiders said.
