European Union finance ministers are gathering in Brussels this morning to tackle the bloc's economic priorities, featuring the increasingly urgent issue of financial support to the Ukrainian government.

Zelenskyy Warns Nation's Existence Depends on Allies

Kyiv's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in a recent interview that Ukraine's existence relied on receiving additional financial aid from international partners.

“I hope, with luck, we will get this decision,” he stated to reporters. Otherwise, “It will be necessary to seek another solution, it’s a question of our surviving. For this reason it is essential urgently. And I count on partners.”

EU Commission Advocates €140bn Compensation Funding

The European Commission continues to aim to persuade member states – including Belgium, that is currently blocking the proposal due to legal fears – to move ahead on a €140 billion reparations loan using Moscow's immobilized funds.

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen insisted today that it would be “the most effective way to support Ukraine’s defence and national finances.”

Resolution Delayed Till Year-End Meeting

A definitive resolution on the issue has been postponed until the EU leaders’s summit in December, with the funding required at the start of the coming year.

Talks Coincide with Bribery Allegations in Kyiv

But the talks are happening during a tricky moment for Kyiv, as Zelenskyy was forced to contain growing public outrage in Ukraine regarding a bribery incident in the energy sector, firing two ministers allegedly involved in participating in a large-scale corruption network.

Danish finance leader Stephanie Lose was questioned on her response to the scandal, and affirmed that there was commitment to continue supporting the Ukrainian people.

“Naturally, Ukraine will have to continuously work with improvements, reinforcing every sector of the nation [and] that also applies to fighting graft … but it is clear that there’s a strong European support with Kyiv,” she stated.

Separately, observers will be monitoring the Netherlands where the legislature convenes to discuss potential ways ahead in the government formation process, the Italy-Albania consultations in Rome offering the most recent opportunity to witness the remarkable Meloni-Rama dynamics, and a number of top-tier meetings across Europe, including Nato’s the secretary general's trip to a military installation in Germany.
