Approximately fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then discovered numerous other marked cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say initial examinations suggest the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; authorities are not yet informed of any harm in connection with the incident," they stated.
City officials announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
A high-ranking political figure stated the vandalism left him speechless and had to be resolved quickly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist attack five years ago," he stated on online, mentioning the killing of nine people by a shooter aiming at people of foreign heritage in 2020.
