As Sunbathers Ran From Danger, Widely-Shared Image Depicts Lifeguard Running ‘Full Speed’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, views the iconic beach as her own backyard. On that particular weekend evening, she, along with numerous local residents, heard pops reverberating around the community.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Stepping out of her home, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw signaled something was wrong.

As she stood on the street, talking to a couple who had rushed up the hill soaked, she noticed someone moving up at her rear. It was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed towards Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. He was alone heading in the path that the crowd was trying to flee, carrying that big kit and unshod … He’s running at something that surely every fibre in your being would tell you to go in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally pedal to the metal racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage During Crisis

The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many moments of heroism in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, police and medical teams attending to dozens of those hurt.

Community Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to emerge from the community, with the patrol base adjacent to the location of the incident serving as a temporary medical station. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, for instance entering the surf to rescue people in distress.

After the attack, messages of appreciation were shared. An online statement conveyed gratitude for the individuals who exhibited that “compassion will always triumph over hatred”.

The group of lifeguards published a statement, noting they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many professional beach safety officers, remarked that the team acted heroically from the instant the incident commenced right into late that evening.
