Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this charming family go about their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
